| Give me manufacturer and model of your external hard drive. Any modern hard drives (most notably, Western Digital) should just plug in, load up the drivers, then do an autoplay. However, some drivers tend to use things like U3 and like to pwn your computer if you feck anything up (not to mention they're slow as hell). If it's a cheap-o by a third-party company, I wouldn't be surprised at all if your computer just doesn't find it a very tasteful drive, and I'd get rid of it for a WD.
Also, note your operating system, just in case.
EDIT: Oh, and to actually answer you question, external hard drives (for the most part), just act like an internal one. It's basically just a C drive, but with a different letter.

| In order to download files from the internet, you must create a temporary buffer file, which is located in your boot drive (which is presumably the C drive). Technically, it would work out if your computer knew that it was only 2G, because the temporary file could be replaced as you download, but your computer isn't that smart and just thinks it's all going to one place on the C drive. You have to free up enough room to match the size of the download. | |

| k i was one step ahead of you... so i freed up to 3gb by moving some folders into my external hard drive... now like i try to save it into my external hard drive, and it says theres still not enough space when i do. so i check the c drive and it says i have 756mb.. when orgiannly i had around 2.89gb freed. and i looked in a folder that said 2.4gb, and i added up all the mb the folder really was, and its only 100mb.. so its mistaken a folder thats orginally 100mb for 2.5gb.. wth is with that? | |

| What folder was this. If it was any unique of system folder, you could have "view hidden files" off, which tends to take up a consider amount of space. You can turn it on in Folder Option in the control panel under view.
Other than that, sometimes Vista doesn't recognize certain things being saved into a file (such as pictures saved from internet sites), but I doubt it'd accumulate that much space.
